Play Area Equipment on the Close – Wychavon Legacy Grant Application 2022
The timber play equipment on the Close was installed and opened May 2004. The costs were met by a combination of fundraising in the Parish and grants.
As most of you will have noticed the zipwire was taken out of operation by the Parish Council just over 2 years ago. A safety inspection of all of the equipment at that time picked up that the timber supports were decaying and zipwire wasn’t safe. Since then, similar timber decay has resulted in the balance beam being completely removed. All of the remaining original pieces of timber equipment, the play house, the horse and cart and the multi activity timber tower, are showing signs of similar timber decay. While the Parish Council is continuing to maintain those items to keep as many items as possible of the play equipment open for use and safe, those items of equipment will not last that much longer.
When the zipwire was taken out of operation, the Parish Council began looking at the costs of either repairing or replacing it. We are mindful that the timber play equipment has lasted 16 to 18 years. We are, therefore, looking at replacements which will have longer lifespans and be there for future generations to use. This all comes at a significant cost. Replacing the zipwire alone has been costed at circa £16,000, which is a significant proportion of our annual precept. We think that replacing all of the timber equipment, with items which have similar playability but which are built to last, will cost in the region of £80k.
Although the Parish Council does not have the available funding for a project of that size, we are fortunate that we have the opportunity to make an application for funding as part of the latest round of Wychavon Community Legacy Grant. The Parish Council thinks that the replacement of the timber play equipment fits with the aims of the grant, and we have already had initial discussions with both Wychavon and with our District Councillor, Thomas Havermann-Mart, which have been well received.
As part of the application, we will be producing a Parish-wide consultation document which will be delivered to all residents, as well as making it available online.
However, before we do that, we really need some ideas of the items of play equipment that you would like to see on the Close!
It doesn’t matter if you are parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts or if you just liked to use the zipwire yourselves (which I know I did!), any suggestions will really help us make the consultation as meaningful as possible and help us to deliver the solution the Parish wants.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please either:
• Email them to clerk@pebworthparishcouncil.co.uk
• Give our Parish Clerk, Donna Bowles, a call on 01386 421028
• Speak to any Parish Councillor
• Respond to this post in the comments below
Please let us have any comments or suggestions by Wednesday 30th March
Once we have your feedback, we will put together a consultation document which will be issued in the first week of April.
Thank you for your help in this project – any feedback would be hugely appreciated.
