St Peter’s Church has an active and lively team of bellringers who ring the bells for services, weddings and a variety of other special occasions.
We meet on a Friday evening at 19.30 to practice and visitors are always welcome to come along to see what we do or even have go…
We have ten bells with the tenor bell (the largest) weighing in at just over 600kg (11cwt). Although that seems very large, it is actually quite small compared to most rings of 10. The bells are rung from a gallery at the west end of the church which allows the congregation and visitors the opportunity to see this ancient art in action.
Bell ringing is a highly sociable activity and in addition to ringing at St Peter’s, we often visit other towers or meet up with other teams as well enjoying good company in the local pub afterwards!
We are always looking to recruit new ringers to the band, so if you would like to learn, we can teach you…. Firstly… ANYONE CAN DO IT!
There are no age limits… (we know ringers from age 9 to 90!)
You do not need to be strong
No musical ability is necessary
You don’t have to commit to every Sunday
You do not have to be physically fit*
And…
It’s fun
It is free
It is good exercise – mentally & physically
Learning to ring is not dissimilar to learning to drive.., so it will take you a few months to control a bell… at which point you will become part of community of thousands of ringers and towers, where you will always be made welcome should you wish to visit….
If you would to like to visit, learn or have us ring for your special occasion, please call Neil on 07786 702457, email [email protected]… or just pop in on a Friday evening… and we have our own website where you can find out more about this ancient art…. https://pebworthbells.wixsite.com/website
*As a guide you do need to be able to stand for about 5 minutes at one go and climb the staircase into the ringing gallery.
